Saturday morning bank robbery on Terre Haue's south side

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities are investigating a bank robbery that occurred Saturday morning.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department said the bank robbery occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. when a suspect, who was wearing what appeared to be a surgical-type mask, entered the Old National Bank branch located at 4675 South U.S. Highway 41 with a gun, described as a small silver handgun, and demanded money.

Police said that no injuries were reported during the robbery but there were several customers inside the bank including a young child.

Police said the staff at the bank cooperated with the suspect’s demands and then fled the bank through a rear door. The alleged robber fled west from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

A search of the area by deputies and Terre Haute Police and K-9 units did not locate the suspect, police said.

It is believed that the suspect may have been marked with an exploding dye pack and should be marked with red dye and that the suspect possibly left in a vehicle, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 40 and 50, a height of 5-feet, 6-inches  to 5-8 tall, between 140 to 160 pounds wearing blue jeans, gray tee-shirt, tan ball cap and dark sunglasses, according to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and the FBI has been called in to assist, police said.
