Teen involved in deadly crash of stolen car appears in court

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute teen arrested on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash is set to return to Terre Haute City Court next Thursday.

Michael S. Collier, 18,  was arraigned Thursday morning on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, illegal consumption of alcohol and for failing to aid a person injured or entrapped in an accident.

He was appointed a public defender, and his bond was set at $3,500 with no 10 percent allowed.

Collier and three juveniles, ages 16 and 17, were reportedly in a stolen car when it crashed early Wednesday on Miami Gardens Road in eastern Vigo County. The driver, 19-year-old Jesse Kelly of Terre Haute, was pronounced dead at the scene by Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos.

An autopsy conducted Thursday morning by forensic pathologist Dr. Roland Kohr determined Kelly died of compression asphyxia. The results of toxicology tests are pending.

By the time deputies from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the crash scene, other occupants of the auto had fled the area, police said. A person who witnessed the theft of the auto had reported to police that several people were in the car.

Investigators on Wednesday located and interviewed the alleged participants about the incident. The juveniles were taken to the Vigo County Juvenile Detention Facility to face the same charges as Collier, police said.
