Riley firefighters had just heard on the emergency scanner Thursday night that a tornado was nearby when they looked west of their firehouse on Indiana 159 and saw one traveling northwest across a field.
The tornado, firefighters said, narrowly missing Volunteer Field at the Riley Recreation League and then leveled a storage shed at a nearby residence. No injuries were reported.
The twister came about the time a strong thunderstorm was moving through Vigo County.
The department sent emergency apparatus to the residence at 8:37 p.m. to begin assessing damage, according to a news release.
A few miles west, several trees were reported down in the Richland Manor housing area, near Honey Creek Middle School. Windows were broken out of at least one house.
