UPDATE: SPPRAK segment to air May 3

TERRE HAUTE — A handful of Vigo County school kids and a Wabash Valley not-for-profit will get a few moments of nationwide attention Friday on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.

An NBC News crew visited Lost Creek Elementary School on Monday for a feature story on the SPPRAK Pack, a program that encourages kids to recognize acts of kindness.

Samira Puskar, a producer with NBC News, contacted Robin Heng of SPPRAK in an email on Wednesday stating the news piece “might” air today. A second email confirmed that the segment would air Friday.

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams has a viewership of about 9 million, according to first-quarter ratings data.

SPPRAK, formed in 2009 by Heng, Kim Grubb and Susan Short, stands for Special People Performing Random Acts of Kindness.

“This is a great chance to put the Wabash Valley in the spotlight,” Heng said Wednesday, adding she and the other founders of SPPRAK plan to watch the news segment at home with their families.

“I think [all of the recent publicity] has really brought the [SPPRAK Pack] program to light,” Heng said.

The program encourages kids to recognize acts of kindness they see around them by writing them on sticky notes and posting them on designated banners inside each Vigo County elementary school.

The $1,500 program is funded by grants from Duke Energy and Indiana American Water.

In the past, SPPRAK has started programs to eliminate graffiti, has raised money for various local charities and also for the K-9 unit of the Terre Haute Police Department. To learn more about SPPRAK, visit their Facebook page or send them an email at
