WTWO NBC2 brings home awards from SPJ ceremony

TERRE HAUTE — WTWO NBC2 was honored recently by the “Best of the Best in Indiana Journalism.”

Patrick Fazio’s reporting on Illinois eavesdropping laws earned the First Amendment Award at the Society of Professional Journalist Awards ceremony held April 19 in Indianapolis.

The station also won a second-place award for Best Feature Reporting. Fazio and photographer Mike McGill were honored for their story “Train Crash Miracle” about a family that survived a horrific crash with a train.

In addition to the SPJ Awards, WTWO won three Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards; Feature Reporting, News Series and Continuing Coverage.

Both Feature Reporting and News Series Awards were based on stories Fazio and photographer Bob Bruce covered while traveling to Israel with Holocaust Survivor Eva Kor in her “Journey for Peace.” That same series also recently won a National Wilbur Award. The Wilber Award is given to secular media for excellence in reporting religious issues.

The Continuing Coverage Award was given for reporting done on the Illinois Eavesdropping Laws.

“We are honored to be recognized for the efforts of our news team,” WTWO Vice President and General Manager Tim Sturgess said. “Patrick has done an outstanding job of bringing quality journalism and intriguing stories to viewers in the Wabash Valley. It is a team effort and Patrick will be the first to tell you that he could not have won these awards without the support of the entire news staff.”
