Optimists begin ‘Clothe-A-Child’ drive

TERRE HAUTE — Again this year, Terre Haute Super Walmart on U.S. 41 will sponsor the Noon Optimist Club’s effort to raise more than $50,000 to clothe almost 1,000 needy children in the Terre Haute area.

“Super Walmart will again make a substantial donation in money, time and effort to this year’s campaign,” said Jim Cheesman, chairman of the 79th annual Noon Optimist Club “Clothe-A-Child” Drive.

“Without the cooperation of the Super Wal-Mart management and employees, we would be hard-pressed to take care of all the children that are signed up to receive new clothing,” Cheesman said in a press release.

Noon Optimist Club members are working with teachers in Vigo County to determine which children, in kindergarten to fifth grade, are eligible to receive clothing. The children, depending on their needs, will receive a new coat, hoodie, shirt, pants, socks and underwear. These children will meet on Dec. 14 at the southside Walmart to be properly sized and outfitted.

The annual “Clothe-A-Child” auction will be conducted at the V.F.W. at 12th and Mulberry Streets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Local businesses have donated hundreds of items for the auction. Some of the items include: autographed Steve Weatherford football, 2002 Dodge Intrepid from Vigo Dodge, 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt from Terre Haute Chevy, 1997 Doge Neon from Mace Ford, autographed ISU basketball and football, autographed T-shirt from the Indiana Fever, Two tickets to the inaugural Grand Prix of Indy on May 10, 2014, furniture, toys, clothing and tools.

Those interested in learning more about the auction can call Nick Telezyn at 812-239-6777.

Contributions should be made payable to the Noon Optimist Club and mailed to Dale Hayhurst, 519 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

All proceeds for the “Clothe-A-Child” Drive go to buying new clothes for about 1,000 children.
