Weight restriction lowered on Indiana 46 Bridge over Eel River

Vehicles over 14 tons need to seek alternate route

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation advises motorists that the weight limit restriction of 19 tons has been reduced to 14 ons on the Indiana 46 Bridge over the Eel River in Clay County.

Based upon a recent inspection of the bridge, INDOT has determined that vehicles weighing over 14 tons are not allowed to travel on this bridge. The conditions of the bridge have warranted placing this weight restriction on this bridge. Signs displaying “Weight Limit 14 Tons” are posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of Indiana 59 and Indiana 46, Indiana 246 and Indiana 46, plus in Spencer at U.S. 231 and Indiana 46.

The through truss bridge was originally built in 1933 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A contract to build a new bridge is being developed. The current schedule for the project has bids opening in late 2015 or early 2016 with construction in 2016 and 2017. The new bridge will be open to traffic by early 2018.

INDOT reminds motorist to use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, visit www.in.gov/indot.
