Hilly Hundred route skips cantankerous Greene County

ELLETTSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The thousands of bicyclists on rural central Indiana roads for this weekend’s Hilly Hundred won’t be going through one county where officials didn’t welcome the event.

Organizers expect more than 5,000 cyclists from around the country to take part in the rides Saturday and Sunday in Monroe, Morgan and Owen counties around the Bloomington area for the 46th annual event.

Hilly Hundred director Skip Higgins tells The Herald-Times of Bloomington this year’s route doesn’t include Greene County in order to create a less strenuous ride with a bit less climbing.

But Greene County’s attorney sent organizers a letter last year saying officials there didn’t believe its county roads were suitable for such a large number of bicyclists.

This weekend’s rides begin and end each day at Edgewood High School in Ellettsville.
