Shopping is about to be become a charitable endeavor in Vermillion County on Friday, when participating “Shop United” businesses will donate 10 percent of their daily sales to the United Way of the Wabash Valley.
This year’s United Way campaign goal is $1.86 million.
Shop United has the potential to achieve multiple goals that benefit United Way agencies, participating merchants and the public, according to Claudia Tanoos, 2012 campaign chair of the United Way of the Wabash Valley and vice president of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corp. Focus counties for this year’s Shop United events include Sullivan and Vigo on Dec. 3.
Merchants participating in Shop United will have a dedicated audience of up to 50 people arrive by motorcoach to visit their businesses. Tour customers arriving by coach will have paid $50 a ticket for the daylong shopping and touring experience, which includes presentations by some United Way agencies in the participating counties.
On Friday, a Good News Travels motorcoach will board passengers in both Terre Haute and Clinton for the all-day Vermillion County tour.
Shop United destinations in Clinton are Attic Buddees, 404 N. Ninth St.; Mildred & Co., 2024 E. Indiana 163; and Fossi Bakery, 456 N. Ninth St. In Dana, shoppers will visit Brooke’s Candy Co. at 247 Maple St. on Indiana 71. In Cayuga, the group will tour the Windy Ridge Vineyard and Winery at 3998 N. 150 Road West. United Way agency presentations that day will center on the Kid Kare Project and Valley Child Development Center Inc.
Participating retailers will display a Shop United window sign on the designated Shop United day. The sign is a symbol of the merchant’s commitment to donate 10 percent of their sales from that day to the United Way, said Tanoos.
Members of the public who make purchases in Shop United businesses on that day, along with tour customers, will be benefiting the UWWV through purchases from participating merchants.

First Financial Bank, which has branches in all UWWV counties, is the presenting sponsor for the Shop United events. Additional sponsors are B & S Plumbing and Heating, Hamilton Center, Ivy Tech Community College, SMC Inc. and Good News Travels.

Miller, Ivy Tech; Karen Rusk, Union Hospital; Jennifer Eastridge, Indiana State University; Sally Whitehurst, First Financial Bank, and Tanoos.
The UWWV, with its focus on three impact areas — education, income and health — supports more than 30 agencies in the six-county area.
