---- — A 71-year-old woman died this morning from injuries she sustained after a pickup struck her power chair in downtown Sullivan.

The accident occurred around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Court and Beech streets.

The woman has been identified as Evelyn Norfleet, who was returning to her home at Sunrise Towers, according to Sullivan city police officer Scott McCammon, who investigated the accident.

The driver of the pickup truck was Robert Foutch, 73, also of Sullivan. He told police he did not see Norfleet in time to avoid the accident.

According to McCammon, Norfleet was crossing Beech Street when the accident happened. Foutch had stopped for a stop sign on Beech and was turning north onto Court Street when he struck Norfleet.

It appears the victim then fell off the power chair, which was dragged under the pickup for a short distance, McCammon said.

Norfleet was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital and died at the hospital.

An Indiana State Police trooper issued a traffic citation to the pickup driver for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene.
