Emerald ash borer confirmed in Vigo County

TERRE HAUTE — It’s official. Emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that kills ash trees, has been confirmed in Vigo County by state and federal officials.

EAB was found last week on the Indiana State University campus by a Purdue University entomologist, who sent a sample from the tree to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where the EAB infestation was confirmed. Purdue and DNR entomologists determined the tree had been infested for three years.

EAB, first detected in Indiana in 2004, has now been found in 59 Indiana counties. The primary mode of transport for this pest is through movement of firewood in campgrounds.

Vigo County is among 80 counties included in the Indiana EAB quarantine, which regulates the movement of certain materials such as whole ash trees, ash limbs, untreated ash lumber with the bark attached, and cut firewood of any hardwood species with the bark attached. Moving regulated materials out of the quarantined area requires a compliance agreement from the DNR.
