Statue dedication to kick off police memorial event

TERRE HAUTE — The dedication of a statue to fallen Terre Haute Police Officer Brent Long and his K-9 companion Shadow will kick off a police memorial ceremony on Thursday at the THPD headquarters on Wabash Avenue.

The 11 a.m. ceremony annually honors THPD officers killed in the line of duty. The ceremony is open to the public.

Long and Shadow were both shot while serving a warrant on North Eighth Street in July 2011. Long was fatally wounded, and Shadow was shot in the jaw, resulting in a career-ending injury.

The statue of Long and Shadow will be the centerpiece of the future officer memorial that will recognize each fallen THPD officer.

The statue was designed by local artist Bill Wolfe and cast in bronze. The memorial is to be finalized with the completion of a new THPD headquarters adjacent to the current location at Twelfth Street and Wabash Avenue.

The ceremony occurs the week prior to Peace Officer’s Memorial Day on May 15.

Members of the THPD Color Guard will again be traveling to Washington, D.C., for National Police Week events May 12 through May 16.
