As water recedes, Red Cross moves into flooded areas

Drinking water, cleaning kits being distributed to flood victims

DRESSER — With water receding Friday from many roads, the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter continued an effort to visit families impacted from flooding along the Wabash River.

Red Cross volunteers Richard and Janet Atkins drove a disaster relief vehicle through Dresser, located directly on the west side of the Wabash River from Terre Haute, to provide cleanup kits — which include chloride, gloves, mop and broom — and bottled water to impacted residents.

The volunteers visited a dozen families in the morning and visited about six more families in the early afternoon in Dresser.

John Brock, who lives on Sampson Road, was thankful for the aid.

“Our well is still under water,” Brock said. “The water and cleaning stuff will help out. I think the Red Cross is doing a good job.

“This the second time it has been bad with flooding, since I have been here. I have been here since 2009,” Brock said.

Evelyn Jarvis had to wade through water up to her shins from her house fronting High Drive in Dresser.

“It would be nice to have water for us in the house instead of all around it,” she said as she collected bottled drinking water from the Red Cross.

Jarvis said she has lived in the home for the past 30 years.

Friday marked she and her husband’s 32nd anniversary, she said.

“Yeah, it’s a nice one,” she said, flicking a cigarette butt into the water that covered her yard.

In addition to Dresser, Red Cross volunteers visited areas in southern Vigo County and in Clinton, said Carol Stevens, executive director of the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter. Prior to Dresser, the Red Cross had distributed 44 cleanup kits and 15 cases of bottled water, speaking with 50 families, Stevens said.

Today, the Red Cross will visit families in Reelsville impacted from a rising Walnut Creek, Stevens said.

The disaster relief vehicles, Stevens said, are being used in lieu of a Red Cross service center to reach families in need. For more information, call the local Red Cross office at 812-232-3393 and press 0 for the operator.
