Arrested deputy placed on immediate administrative leave

TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County Sheriff’s deputy arrested Friday on allegations related to child pornography has been placed on immediate administrative leave, Sheriff Greg Ewing said Saturday.

Ewing could not comment further on the case because it has been sealed by the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Indiana. The case is sealed because the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff said.

“It is now a federal investigation,” Ewing told the Tribune-Star on Saturday evening.

The Indiana State Police, who conducted the investigation into the allegations, also were not commenting further or releasing the name of the deputy Saturday. On Friday, Sgt. Joe Watts said the case was “now a U.S. attorney case. We can’t speak for them.”

Watts, reached Saturday, said he had no new information to release on the case.

Attempts to contact U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett of the Southern District of Indiana were unsuccessful Saturday evening. The U.S. Attorney’s office is expected to conduct a news conference about the case Monday.

A Terre Haute television station, WTWO-TV 2, citing “authorities,” broadcast the name of a deputy Saturday evening it said was facing charges of child pornography.
