Terre Haute City Council amends parking violation statutes

TERRE HAUTE — On Aug. 12, the Terre Haute City Council passed General Ordinance 13, amending parking violation statutes.

Several highlights include: Failing to satisfy five or more parking citations can now result in the immediate towing and impounding of the violator’s vehicle. The Terre Haute Police Department will be required to notify the registered owner of the vehicle within 24 hours of it being impounded. Vehicles can be impounded at any time of the day (including weekends and holidays).

The following information is being provided by Mayor Duke Bennett’s office to help citizens understand the process for satisfying the unpaid violations and obtaining the release of the impounded vehicle:

• Tickets are $10 if paid within five business days of issuance, $15 after that.

• Tickets can be paid with cash or money order only.

• Payments can only be made at the City Clerk's Office, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• The vehicle will not be released until all outstanding tickets are paid.

• The vehicle's license plate number is required by the clerk's office; however,

• If there is no license plate number, the Social Security number of the registered owner can be used.

• The receipt from the clerk's office then will be taken to the Terre Haute Police Department (Traffic Division), 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• The registered owner of the vehicle will need his/her driver's license and proof of insurance.

• The Traffic Division then will order the release of the vehicle.

In addition to the citation fees, the owner will be responsible for all towing and impound fees. The City of Terre Haute encourages all those with outstanding citations to get them paid before General Ordinance 13 takes effect Sept. 14.
