---- — A medical emergency may have caused a fatal one-vehicle crash just before 4 p.m. Monday on westbound Interstate 70 in Putnam County. The fatality was about 17 miles from a three-vehicle fatality that occurred earlier Monday afternoon.

The driver, identified as Francis Paquette, 74, of East Taunton, Mass., later died at the hospital.

The driver reportedly had no vital signs when emergency responders arrived. However, paramedics were able to reinstate vital signs and transported Paquette to the Putnam County Hospital in critical condition.

Hospital personnel told the Indiana State Police the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash. ISP said the driver had been treated at the hospital for internal injuries.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed a 1997 black Ford van was westbound on I-70 near the 47-mile marker when it veered north off the highway, drove into a ditch, and struck several bushes and a few trees.
