Boil advisory issued for Merom

Advisory affects 125 Indiana American Water customers

Indiana American Water has issued a boil water advisory affecting about 125 customers in Merom after a private contractor working in the area struck a phone line, knocking out communication lines between company facilities and remote automated control equipment.

Customers in the affected area were without water service for several hours on Wednesday evening after the incident. A boil advisory has been issued since pressure dropped below 20 pounds per square inch in the Merom system. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a distribution system.

Merom customers are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for at least one minute. Tap water can be used for washing/bathing.

Boil advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer’s best interests in mind. It’s possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.

During the boil water advisory, the company performs a series of tests to determine the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. Boil advisories usually last about 18 to 24 hours. Samples are taken from several sites within the affected area. Unless otherwise notified through local media, the boil advisory will be lifted at 10 p.m. today, July 3.

Customers can call the Indiana American Water Customer Service Center at 800-492-8373 for the latest updates.
