Occupants escape early morning house fire

RILEY — Smoke awakened a Riley family early Tuesday morning, and four adults escaped without injury despite heavy fire damage and the absence of smoke detectors in part of the house.

According to a press release from the Riley Fire Department, a fire at the Emory Counterman residence in the 6300 block of Indiana 159 was reported at just after 2 a.m.

Firefighters, within 30 minutes, contained the fire to the room in which it began. Two adults had been sleeping in that room. There were no smoke detectors in that part of the house, the fire department said in its press release.

The fire was believed to be accidental and to have “originated at or near a window air conditioning unit,” according to the press release.

Fire units from Honey Creek, Seelyville and Sugar Creek departments assisted with the fire, as did the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. Indiana 159 was closed for two hours while the fire was being extinguished.

Riley Fire said in the release that it reminds “everyone of the importance of having working smoke alarms in all sections of your home especially sleeping areas.”
