Dalton Firefighter of Year

Awards given at commendation dinner Tuesday

TERRE HAUTE — Scott Dalton received the Firefighter of the Year Award on Tuesday during the ninth annual Terre Haute Firefighters Recognition and Commendation Dinner sponsored by First Financial Bank.

Doug Wuestefeld was named EMT of the Year and he also received the Fire Chief's Exceptional Service award.

Firefighters, friends and family members gathered to celebrate and honor firefighters and civilians for service to the community in 2013.

Event dignitaries included Jon Swaner, WTHI-TV10, master of ceremonies; Terre Haute Fire Department Chief Jeffery Fisher; and Norman L. Lowery, president and CEO, First Financial Corp.

Retired THFD Capt. Sammy Lane was guest speaker for the event in Sycamore Banquet Center, Hulman Memorial Student Union, Indiana State University.

Firefighter Gary Foust, THFD chaplain, provided the invocation. THFD Honor Guard and Terre Haute Firefighters Pipes and Drums conducted the presentation of colors.

Among those honored during special presentations were civilians Michael Clark, Ronald Rector, Russell Straw and Brian Plunkett of Bemis Co. Inc., who received the Kayla Nicole Lewis Award. Sally I. Whitehurst, assistant vice president of Marketing and First Gold Club coordinator, First Financial Bank, received the Community Service Award.

THFD award and commendation recipients for 2013 include:

• Firefighter of the Year: Scott Dalton

• EMT of the Year: Doug Wuestefeld

• Honorable Discharge Award: Firefighter Randy Phillips

• Life Saving Award: Capts. Jay Utz Jr., Steve Yelich and Blaine Chandler

• Honorable Service Award: Capt. John Gardner

• Good Samaritan Award: Capts. Dave McCarty and Fred Hamblen; firefighter James Matherly; Deputy Chief Glen Hall; and Quartermaster Terry Coker

• Fire Chief's Exceptional Service Award: Doug Wuestefeld

• 35 Years of Service Award: Lt. Phil VanSant

• 25 Years of Service Award: Capts. Jeff Clark, Bob Sivertson, Steve Yelich and Blaine Chandler; and firefighters Mike Odum, Kevin Reeves and James White

• 20 Years of Service Award: Capt. Bill Berry and firefighters Floyd Hiatt, Herbert Kalen and Greg Dammann

• 15 Years of Service Award: Assistant Chief Jason Kane; firefighters Bobby Johnson Jr., Jeff Hodges and Troy Shipley

• Paramedic Certification Award: Firefighters Zach Beckner, Bert Hay, Andy Lumaye, Matt Osborne, Bram Sanders and Brent Lloyd

• Education Award: Firefighters Charles Kensell, Gregg Lawson, Jeremey Jones and Rodger Plunkett

• Kayla Nicole Lewis Civilian Award: Michael Clark, Ronald Rector, Russell Straw and Brian Plunkett of Bemis Co. Inc.
