TERRE HAUTE — Indiana Conservation officers Friday arrested a Covington man following an investigation of shooting a rifle from a boat on the Wabash River.

Stephen M. Winland, age 51, of Covington, was taken to the Vermillion County jail on charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm, shooting into or across state water, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

A rifle was found to be mounted to the front of Winland’s jon-boat. Winland was observed shooting rounds from the rifle into the Wabash River near Covington. Conservation officers recovered 105 empty rifle casings from inside the boat. Indiana Conservation Officer Deland Szczepanski observed Winland shooting the rifle. He also observed bullets ricocheting off the water toward, and in close proximity to, the I-74 bridge, in Vermillion County.

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the arrest of Winland. He was taken into custody at his residence and transported to the Vermillion County Jail.
