Trial date confirmed in child neglect case

TERRE HAUTE — A trial date has been confirmed for a Terre Haute woman accused of neglecting her foster children.

A plea agreement may be worked out, however, for 36-year-old Nikki Russell, who was arrested in November 2012 and charged with 14 criminal counts, including neglect of a dependent, criminal confinement and battery relating to foster and adoptive children that resided in her home in the 1600 block of North 12th Street.

Defense attorney Vernon Lorenz said during a hearing Friday morning that work continues on resolving the case against Russell. Her trial remains set for Aug. 26.

Judge John Roach has set a final pretrial hearing date of Aug. 16 in Vigo Superior Court 1.

In November 2012, a teenager found wandering in the city told police that he escaped from the Russell residence where he and his siblings had been confined in their rooms without food, water and sanitary facilities. Police investigated and found evidence that the children in the home had been tied up with duct tape at times, beaten and locked in a bedroom of the home.

The children’s father, 39-year-old Larry D. Russell Jr., was also arrested and faces 11 criminal charges. He has an October trial date.
