Suspect in Bogey’s burglary now in custody

TERRE HAUTE — A suspect who fled on foot after allegedly burglarizing a local establishment and crashing a minivan into a telephone pole early Saturday morning was arrested on the same day close to the scene of the crash at Indiana 63, police said.

Kyle Layman, 27, of Terre Haute was arrested by Vigo County Sheriff’s officials without incident after he emerged from a cornfield and asked one of the off-duty deputies for a ride, authorities said.

Layman was taken to the emergency room and X-rays revealed he has a neck fracture, police said. He was transported to Indianapolis by ground ambulance and will be sent to the Vigo County Jail upon his release, according to police.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reported that the vehicle used in the Saturday morning Bogey’s burglary, pursuit and crash had been in Layman’s control.

According to authorities, a bulletin was released and field units were alerted to look for Layman.

At 3 p.m., off-duty Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom and Sgt. John Davis drove by the scene of the crash to examine the damage, Cottom said.

The off-duty deputies — who were returning from an event in Sullivan County — were on their personal motorcycles and in plain clothes but were armed and carrying their credentials, Cottom said.

Cottom said the suspect, who was covered in blood, came out of a cornfield, approached them and asked him for a ride. Upon determining identification, Layman was taken into custody, police said.

Layman was charged with burglary, fleeing police and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, police said.
