Jeremy Weir, executive director of the Vigo County Area Planning Department, announced his resignation Wednesday night to the county’s Area Plan Commission.
Weir, 43, has overseen the county’s primary zoning and land use department since 2005.
“I just have a better opportunity,” Weir told the commission at its May meeting in the Vigo County Annex. The 14-member commission oversees requests for zoning changes in the county with the assistance of the professional staff in the Area Planning Department, which Weir will continue to oversee until May 24.
“I do want to express my thanks and appreciation for everything that you’ve done. It’s a good job and a good commission and a good community,” Weir told the commissioners.
This decision comes after Weir, his department and the commissioners have found themselves at the heart of several controversial and emotional discussions, such as a request to build a retirement community on Ohio Boulevard, a request for oil drilling near Hawthorn Park and a protracted fight between residents of the Woodgate subdivision and developers of Cobblestone Crossings, a newer property development.
Speaking after Wednesday night’s meeting, Weir said those high-profile topics did not play into his decision to take a new job.
“I just feel that this is a better opportunity for me to enhance my career and reach some life goals,” he said. Weir’s new position, which he was not able to make public Wednesday pending an announcement from his new employer, will continue his career in the professional planning field in the Terre Haute area, he said.
“It’s a good step,” Weir said.
Weir’s replacement will be named by the Area Plan Commission, a volunteer body. Fred Wilson, long-time president of the commission, expressed thanks to Weir for his years of service during the meeting.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say I appreciate what you’ve done,” Wilson said. “I hate to see you go, but I certainly wish you well.”
Weir received applause from the approximately two dozen people attending the meeting and from the rest of the commissioners.
Darren Maher, assistant director of the Area Planning Department, normally has the role of overseeing the department in the executive director’s absence, Weir said.
n Also Wednesday, the plan commission heard from several east-side residents living around the Dobbs Glenn, Watertree and Terre Vista subdivisions out of concern with a large, new residential property development proposed for that area.
Several residents expressed concern about water drainage from the proposed subdivision, which would be north of Watertree and adjacent to Terre Vista, Dobbs Glenn and the Village Quarter. The new subdivision, being developed by Monte and Marsha Wenzel, would be known as Terre Vista Glenn. The subdivision would include a pond for water drainage, according to plans submitted to the commission, which gave the proposal a favorable recommendation.
