TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man was arrested on drug and gun charges by Indiana State Police on Friday.

Richard Sanders, 24, was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of marijuana under 30 grams, and an active parole violation warrant.

According to an ISP news release, Trooper Mike Finney stopped a car on suspicion of having an expired registration plant and of driving left of center near South Seventh Street and Springhill Drive. The vehicle was driven by a 23-year-old Terre Haute woman who was later released without arrest.

Before making the traffic stop, Finney said, he noticed the front seat passenger was moving around inside the vehicle. During the investigation, police found that Sanders was in possession of about seven grams of marijuana and a Springfield XD 9mm handgun with several rounds of ammunition. Police also found that Sanders was wanted by the Indiana Department of Correction on a parole violation warrant.

Sanders was taken to the Vigo County Jail where he is being held on a cash only bond of $75,000. His next court date is Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 1.
