Coalition pushes for moms to quit smoking

TERRE HAUTE — On this Mother’s Day, members of Vigo County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition are encouraging women to use the Indiana Tobacco Quitline and quit smoking for themselves and for the ones they love.

“Women who smoke can greatly benefit from the free counseling and support services provided by the Indiana Tobacco Quitline,” Libby Ray, Vigo County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation coordinator, said in a news release.

Indiana’s smoking rate for pregnant women is approximately 17 percent, higher than the national rate of 9 percent. Most of Indiana’s 92 counties have a smoking-during-pregnancy rate higher than the Indiana average.  According to the most recent statistics from the Indiana State Department of Health, Vigo County’s rate of smoking during pregnancy is 21 percent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, quitting smoking can reduce the risks of respiratory illness, miscarriages, stillbirths and infant deaths.

Hoosier women who call the Indiana Tobacco Quitline, 800-QUIT-NOW, will also receive information on secondhand smoke effects on children, quit tips specific to pregnant women and the role of family support. For more information, contact 812-232-5190, ext. 64, or
