Voter turnout low in Parke County, clerk says

While voting is steady, the number of voters casting a ballot is down from the previous election in Parke County, said county Clerk Diana Hazlett.

“The numbers were down this morning about 10 percent from the presidential election, but that is understandable” as presidential elections typically have a larger voter turnout, the clerk said.

“Even at 6 a.m., when many people vote on the way to work, the numbers were down,” she said.

Absentee ballots were down about the same percentage, Hazlett said. “We had under 500 absentee ballots cast,” by Monday’s deadline.

Hazlett said she does not have the percentage of voters who have cast a ballot so far today.

However, today’s election has run smoothly so far, with one small problem at Raccoon Township, where a clerk was sick. “We had a back up there, so the poll opened on time and was not a problem,” Hazlett said.
