Sullivan’s winning diesel to pass through town this morning on way to Henry Ford Museum

TERRE HAUTE — An engineering masterwork is coming home to Sullivan today.

Sullivan High School students took first place in the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition last weekend in Houston. Their vehicle, “Black Diesel,” was expected to make a stop around 8:30 a.m. today at Sullivan High School on its way to Detroit, where it will be on display at the Henry Ford Museum.

“Black Diesel” earned a score of 1,899 miles per gallon to take top honors at the international competition in the category reserved for prototype diesels.

The “No Spark Plug Allowed” team joins others from Canada, Colorado and Evansville in taking first-place honors at the annual event.

“Black Diesel” also set a new American fuel-efficiency record for the Shell Eco-marathon in the diesel category.

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas is a global competition that challenges high school and college students to design, build and test the most energy-efficient vehicles they can.
