Chamber plans to have new leader by June 1

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce is on track to having a new leader before summer.

Last week was the deadline for interested candidates to submit résumés for the top job at the chamber, which became vacant when Ken Brengle, former president, stepped down at the end of February.

About 15 candidates from all across the country — including the Wabash Valley — have submitted résumés for the position, said Jeanette Winchester, chairwoman of the chamber’s board of directors.

June 1 is the target date to have a new president at the helm, she said.

“We’ve got some excellent candidates to consider,” Winchester said. “We’re very excited because we have some very qualified local people as well.”

The next step is for the chamber’s human resources committee to consider the applicants and whittle the field down to a smaller number, Winchester said. Then the chamber’s nine-member executive committee will reduce the field even further to two or three candidates before a final choice is made the chamber’s 30-member board of directors, she said.

Everything is being done internally, Winchester said. No outside search firm will be used to narrow the field of choices, she said.

The selection process is currently on track to have a new president in place by the target date, Winchester said. “Hopefully we’ll have an announcement in the next six weeks or so,” she said.

Brengle resigned as president effective Feb. 28 after fewer than two years in office. He replaced Rod Henry, who left the chamber in 2011 after 20 years as president.

Kristen Craig, director of operations and communications at the chamber, has been interim director since Brengle left the post, Winchester said. Craig is not an applicant for the director’s position, she said.

The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce turned 100 years old last year.
