Community-wide discussion on homelessness June 25

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Planning Council on Homelessness for Region 7 is hosting a community-wide discussion on homelessness, its impact upon those who are homeless and the larger community, and solutions. The discussion will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, in Ryves Youth Center at Etling Hall.

The Region 7 Council was formed in 1997 because two needs where identified in the local community. The first was the city of Terre Haute needed a process in which community members came together to identify and discuss various community development issues for the Comprehensive Community Plan. The second need was identified through the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Continuum of Care to allocate homeless assistance grants to participating organizations.

The  purpose of the council is to promote a collaborative process through which local organizations address issues of homelessness and can secure targeted federal and state funds to meet community priorities, in order to end homelessness. Member agencies represent Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties.

The recent death of a transient, homeless man, who sought shelter in a dumpster, and the annual Point in Time Count of persons who are homeless attest to the need for communities to effectively address and end homelessness.
