Farmersburg man sentenced after guilty plea in rape case

TERRE HAUTE — A Farmersburg man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a rape that occurred at his parents’ residence in May 2012.

Matthew James Maxwell, 23, was given concurrent sentences on charges of class-A felony rape and class-B criminal confinement. He also was ordered to serve 10 years in prison, with two years suspended to probation. He was given credit for 386 days already served in jail since his arrest.

Maxwell was arrested last year after the victim told the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department that Maxwell invited her to his house to watch a movie, and while there, he pulled out a hunting knife and forced her into his bedroom.

The victim told police that Maxwell became increasingly violent when he smoked synthetic marijuana while they were watching the movie. She stated that he also handcuffed her for a while during the incident and refused to let her leave his parents’ home.
