Terre Haute gives out art grants

TERRE HAUTE — The City of Terre Haute backed its support of local arts organizations with funding on Wednesday, as grants totaling $21,500 were presented to seven nonprofit organizations.

“When talking about the arts in this community, it never ends in the positive things that can be said about the arts,” said Mayor Duke Bennett as he presented checks from the 2013-14 City Arts Project Grant Awards to the organizations at the Arts Illiana office on North Sixth Street.

The grants come from economic development funds, Bennett said, and the investment has a high return through the influence of the arts in the community.

Four organizations received operating support for the coming year for a total of $14,000. Accepting checks for $3,500 each were Mary Kramer of Art Spaces Inc., Miren Beristain of Community Theatre of Terre Haute, Marianne Richter of Sheldon Swope Art Museum Inc., and Tiffani Schmidt of Terre Haute Symphony Association Inc.

Receiving funds for specific arts projects were Marlene Lu and Curt DeBaun with $1,000 for the Chinese School of the Wabash Valley, Sandy Mutchler with $3,000 for Crossroads of America Youth Orchestra and James Chesterson with $3,500 for Terre Haute Community Band.

The Chinese School presents a Chinese cultural awareness project with Ryves Youth Center, using both visual and performing arts as a platform. The youth orchestra presents “The Four Seasons,” a series of four family events centered around the seasons that include a craft activity, story time, a “make and take” instrument and a youth orchestra performance. The community band will present a themed children’s concert specifically intended to appeal to young families or extended families with a variety of additional activities to complement the concert and expand the entertainment value of the event.

Arts Illiana administers the grant program on behalf of the city. A panel studied the grant applications during a public review process in early October.
