Cross-country walker finds new enlightenment on purposeful journey

TERRE HAUTE — With each mile, each new town, Dave Brown enlightens others and learns something himself.

The 61-year-old Philadelphian left Atlantic City, N.J., on Feb. 28 on a walk across America along historic U.S. 40. His goal is to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, the “brutal” disease that quickly took his wife Joan’s life in 2011. His destination is San Francisco, where he hopes to be by Oct. 12.

This morning, he hit Seelyville, expecting to pass through Terre Haute and reach the Illinois border by evening.

Brown retired from a job he loved — handling information technology at a Philly-based investment management firm — to train and then carry out his seven-month, cross-country walk. He’s received an astonishing level of support from those touched by cancer, fitness enthusiasts, National Road buffs and everyday people.

He is getting to better know the country and its people. He’s had to spend the night in a hotel on just three of his 60 days on the road, so far, as numerous supporters have offered to lodge him for the night. “I knew people were generous, but it’s just been off the charts,” he said.

Donations to Dave Brown’s Walk Across America can be directed through the national Ovarian Cancer Research Fund online at
