Variety is the spice of life: Ivy Tech Plant Sale gears up for another season

TERRE HAUTE — More than 30 varieties of tomatoes await planting in area gardens — a project of horticulture students at Ivy Tech Community College—Wabash Valley.

On Mondays and Wednesdays through May 8, the greenhouse in the Vigo County Industrial Park will host the Ivy Tech Plant Sale from noon to 5 p.m.

 The Ivy Tech Collegiate FFA Chapter is offering more than 75 different kinds of plants in its second season of the plant sale.

“The students took what they learned from last year, and expanded their offering to include early season veggies, peppers and herbs,” instructor John Rosene explained on Monday.

Tomatoes are a big seller, he said, and the students developed the list of what to grow and sell. The plant sale is the business end of their classes, which include the techniques of propagation, collecting seeds, and cross pollination.

Among the tomatoes, the varieties include heirloom plants that are grown from seed, open pollinated plans that were recently developed, hybrid plants which have been commercially produced, bush type and vine type plants.

The greenhouse also includes a large variety of plants grown specifically for the Master Gardeners program, which operates a community garden at the Vigo County Fairgrounds.

Other projects for the agriculture program are evident as tropical plants, including key lime, are lined along the north wall of the greenhouse. A blooming jasmine plant fragrantly adorns the air, a ficus tree is undergoing propagation, and several other plants are watered through a mist system that will encourage root development on plant cuttings.

Rosene said the public is encouraged to visit the greenhouse during the plant sale to purchase plants for spring planting.
