Wabash Valley United Way kicks off pilot campaign

22 Valley companies starting fundraising

TERRE HAUTE — The United Way of the Wabash Valley kicked off its pilot campaign Thursday morning by introducing a “Be The One” theme among 22 pilot companies that got a jumpstart on annual fundraising.

“It’s an amazing thing how the community gives of themselves and their money,” Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said to representatives of the pilot companies when they gathered at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. “It takes a community to come together and to serve.”

The pilot companies begin the annual campaign to raise funding for more than 30 agencies in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Clark County in Illinois. For last year’s pilot campaign, $830,000 was raised, amounting to about 45 percent of the total goal of $1,860,000.

United Way Executive Director Troy Fears said the campaign goal for this coming year has not yet been released, but it will be announced at the Sept. 5 campaign kickoff at the Indiana Theatre in Terre Haute.

Again this year, anyone who pledges $25 in new or additional money to the United Way will receive a chance at winning a free car. Each $25 increment of new giving is worth an entry into the drawing. The car will be given away at the United way annual dinner in February.

Fundraising packages given to each pilot company include a DVD highlighting three of the agencies that receive United Way funding. The video features the success achieved by students in the Big Brother Big Sister program, Alternatives for Living and Learning at Booker T. Washington School, and Meals on Wheels.

“It’s all about [being a] spark,” campaign chairman Scott Teffeteller of Union Hospital said. “How do you send that message to everyone in your organization that you can ‘be the one’ to make a difference in someone’s life.”

This year’s pilot companies are Ampacet, Bemis, City of Terre Haute, Clabber Girl, Duke Energy, Dupont, Elanco, Fifth Third Bank, Novelis Group, Old National Bank and Insurance, Providence Medical Group, Real Estate Division, Riddell National Bank, Terre Haute Chevrolet, Terre Haute Savings Bank, Tribune-Star, TRW Automotive, UAP Clinic, Union Hospital, Vectren Energy, WTWO and WAWV, and the United Way of the Wabash Valley.
