County Council District 3 primary goes to teacher

Miller teaches at Otter Creek

TERRE HAUTE — Kathy Miller won the Democratic party nomination for the District 3 seat on the Vigo County Council, garnering nearly 54 percent of the vote.

Miller received 1,004 votes to overcome challenger Curtis A. DeBaun IV, who got 870 votes.

“Things were very quiet in this election,” Miller said. “It was a good race, and I am thankful that the voters have confidence in me to continue to serve them as their representatives for the third district on the County Council.”

Miller, a sixth-grade teacher at Otter Creek Middle School and president of the Vigo County Council for 2014, is seeking a third four-year term on the council. Miller, 39, said she plans to campaign for the November election as if she will have an opponent.

Republicans did not field an opponent in Tuesday’s primary election.

Miller said she thinks experience was the difference in the election. Miller is serving her fourth term this year as council president.

“I would like to think that the voters have noticed the passion that I have for my community and the work that I do. Over the last seven years, we have been able to survive property tax caps and not reduce services and not increase taxes. And we found ways to meet the budget without reducing the number of county employees beyond attrition. It has been a teamwork effort by the County Council,” Miller said.

Telephone messages seeking comment were left Tuesday evening on a cellular telephone for DeBaun.

Republicans who seek to be on the November ballot must submit their candidacies to the party chairman by noon June 30. Party chairs have until noon July 3 to file a candidacy with the county clerk’s office for the November general election, according to the Election Division of the Indiana Secretary of State’s office.
