Super fuel-efficient vehicle making ‘pit stop’ in Sullivan

An engineering masterwork is coming home to Sullivan on Wednesday.

Sullivan High School students took first place in the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition last weekend in Houston. Their vehicle, “Black Diesel,” is making a stop around 9 a.m. Wednesday at Sullivan High School on its way to Detroit where it will be on display in the Henry Ford Museum.

“Black Diesel” earned a score of 1,899 miles per gallon to take top honors at the international competition in the category reserved for prototype diesels. The “No Spark Plug Allowed” team joins crews from Canada, Colorado and Evansville in taking first place honors at the annual event.

“Black Diesel” also set a new American fuel efficiency record for the Shell Eco-marathon in the diesel category.

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas is a global competition that challenges high school and college students to design, build and test the most energy-efficient vehicles they can.

The Sullivan High School winning vehicle is being transported to the Henry Ford Museum by fuel efficiency expert Wayne Gerdes in the back of a 2014 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Limited using a new test market fuel: Shell Diesel FiT.
