October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

TERRE HAUTE — A long purple banner that was unfurled from the fourth-floor rotunda in the Vigo County Courthouse on Monday states that “Domestic Violence Hurts Us All.”

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett joined with county officials to proclaim October as a time that area residents should be aware of the toll domestic violence takes in deaths and injuries.

The Council on Domestic Abuse — or CODA — assists in the public awareness campaign, and CODA board member Cheryl White said the mayor’s proclamation is one of many events organized in October.

“CODA is a completely local organization for people in Parke, Vermillion, Vigo, Clay and Sullivan counties,” White said. “We emphasize problems locally and ways people can help.”

A fundraising event set for Oct. 27 is the Monte Carlo Masquerade. featuring casino-style tables and gaming, socializing and costumes. Proceeds will serve CODA’s mission of making a difference in the lives of victims of domestic violence.

The organization also plans on every Friday in October to show appreciation to community members who support CODA. On Monday, CODA provided a recognition luncheon for criminal justice, courthouse and law enforcement officials who assist in the CODA mission.

CODA offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing and training for law enforcement and medical personnel. Programs include outreach, education, legal advocacy, internships and children’s programs.

“Our goal is to eliminate sexual assault and domestic violence,” White said.

Anyone needing assistance can call the hotline at 800-566-2632 or go online to www.CodaTerreHaute.org to get more information on how to help.
