Police find stolen handgun, drugs during traffic stop

TERRE HAUTE — A traffic stop Monday night on Third Street led to the arrest of a Terre Haute man on drug-related charges and recovery of a stolen handgun that had belonged to a Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputy.

The traffic stop occurred at 9:21 p.m., when driver David Keith Rudisel, 31, of Terre Haute, was driving 50 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone while traveling north on Third Street near Farrington, according to Indiana State Police.

After a check of his driving record and a search of the vehicle, Rudisel was arrested for receiving stolen property, a felony; and for possession of marijuana and possession of a handgun without a license, both misdemeanors.

Also arrested was a passenger in the car, Ashlee Marie Melvin, 30, of Terre Haute, on a Terre Haute City Court warrant for criminal conversion.

A routine check of his driving record revealed Rudisel did not have a valid driver’s license; a routine check of Melvin showed an active warrant for criminal conversion.

Rudisel consented to a search of his vehicle and at the request of Finney, Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Kris Morris arrived with his K-9, Blitz. The police dog displayed common indicators for illegal drugs in the vehicle, so Finney searched a backpack found in the back seat.

Inside the backpack were a loaded, black .45-caliber Kimber handgun, a fake Barbasol shaving cream can with about 10 grams of suspected marijuana, and seven small, perforated squares of paper believed to be a controlled substance.

The squares of paper were sent to the ISP laboratory for analysis and the Kimber handgun was found to have been reported stolen from a Vigo County reserve deputy’s vehicle on Jan. 10, 2013.

Rudisel and Melvin were incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.
