Winter’s costs add up for Vigo

Overtime, salt lead to $119,529 increase this year

TERRE HAUTE — While still within county and city budgets, the snowstorms of January and February were more costly than a year ago.

Vigo County received between 11 and 15 inches of snowfall from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4, then was hit with another snowstorm in the first week of February, getting about 6 inches.

From Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, Vigo County spent $688,950 on snow removal, including materials and overtime pay, which is 19 percent of the highway department’s more than $3.76 million budget, said County Auditor Tim Seprodi.

During the same period in 2013, the county spent 15 percent of its budget on snow removal. “We had an increase of $119,529 in [snow removal costs] this year, compared with last year,” Seprodi said.

Brad Miller, transportation director for the city of Terre Haute, said the city will have a financial update next week on its exact costs for snow removal.

“We have already spent over 40 percent of our budget line item in overtime used and that is directly attributable” to snow removal, Miller said.

The city had paid 17 percent of its budget for overtime by the end of February last year, Miller said.

In addition, the city this year purchased 1,200 tons of salt.

“We are within budget for the salt,” but the city has ordered 20 percent more salt this year, compared with last year, Miller said.
