1st sign of West Nile virus in Indiana for 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana health officials have confirmed the first signs of the West Nile virus activity in Indiana in 2013 in mosquitoes in Adams County, south of Fort Wayne.

The state Department of Health says the virus normally is detected in Indiana in mid-summer. The West Nile virus is commonly found throughout the state. Last year, the virus was found in mosquitoes in every county except Crawford County in southern Indiana.

Health Department Director of Zoonotic and Environmental Epidemiology Jennifer House says the earlier-than-normal detection means Indiana residents are at a greater risk of contracting the virus.

The virus usually causes a mild form of the illness, which can include fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash. Eight people died in Indiana last year from the West Nile virus.
