Terre Haute to host MVC baseball championship in 2014

ST. LOUIS — After 32 years, Terre Haute will once again host the Missouri Valley Conference baseball championship tournament next season.

This morning, the conference announced the sites for its 2013-14 sports championships, and Indiana State University’s Bob Warn Field was listed as the home of the baseball title tourney on May 20-24, 2014. ISU last hosted the event in 1982.

The champion of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2014 MVC Baseball Championship will feature all eight teams. The 2013 MVC Championship will be played next week in Normal, Ill., while the league’s regular-season concludes this weekend.

The ISU facility has been upgraded with the installation of a FieldTurf infield, a new locker room and coaches’ offices, the construction of a new seating area with both chairback and bleacher seats and a larger press box and parking lot. The stadium has also been home to a summer collegiate league squad, the Terre Haute Rex.

The home site was awarded on a bid basis, according to a news release from the MVC. The process includes a recommendation from the league’s Joint Committee (faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators of each institution). All site awards are subject to ratification at the Missouri Valley Conference Presidents’ Council meeting, which takes place May 28.

Other MVC championship sites awarded for the coming school year include the women’s soccer at Evansville, the men’s soccer at Peoria, Ill., volleyball at Wichita, Kan., men’s and women’s tennis team championship at Normal, Ill., men’s basketball at St. Louis, women’s basketball at St. Charles, Ill., and the softball championship at Normal. Also, upcoming title hosts are Bradley (women’s golf at Panther Creek in Springfield, Ill.); Drake (men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s individual tennis); Illinois State (men’s golf at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.); Northern Iowa (men’s and women’s indoor track and field) and Southern Illinois (women’s swimming and diving; women’s individual tennis; and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field).
