New postmaster installed in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE — A new postmaster has been installed to oversee U.S. Postal Service operations in Terre Haute.

Dianna Egold has already led operations at the Terre Haute facility since last fall, earning the praise of Cynthia Klaiber, manager of post office operations for the Greater Indiana district.

“Dianna will do a great job. I’ve already seen that,” Klaiber said during a reception at the mail center. “The community is lucky to have Dianna. She’s an asset to the community.”

With mail service on the decline across the nation, the Terre Haute post office has seen its processing of mail in the 478 prefix moved to Indianapolis. The Terre Haute center still processes mail in the 475 prefix, but that sorting will be moving south to Evansville in about two weeks.

That will end processing at the Terre Haute mail center, but Egold said there is still a lot of work for the in-town and rural carriers who deliver mail Mondays through Saturdays.

“This main plant has 28 city routes and 14 rural routes,” Egold said Friday during a brief tour of the processing center. “At Rose Station will have 26 city routes and eight rural routes.”

All West Terre Haute mail also comes through the Terre Haute plant.

Tim Williams, manager of Rose Station on the city’s east side, said the volume of mail changes from day to day, but the average is 30,000 to 80,000 pieces of mail per say at both the Rose Station and the main center on Margaret Drive. The Rose Station also oversees mail handled through the North Terre Haute Post Office on Lafayette Avenue.

“Five years ago, we had three times the volume of mail we have today,” Williams said.

Egold has been with the USPS for more than 20 years. She began in January 1990 as a part-time flexible carrier in Indianapolis, then became acting supervisor in Indianapolis in 1992. She was promoted to full-time supervisor in 1997, and was then promoted to postmaster at Fillmore in Putnam County in 2000. She was appointed as Brazil postmaster in 2007, and then transitioned to Terre Haute in late 2012.

“I’m excited,” Egold said Friday of being officially installed. “We have a lot of work to do, and people still expect their mail to arrive every day.”
