PALESTINE, ILL. — Authorities say a prisoner who walked away from a work crew at Robinson Correctional Center on Friday has been captured not far away.

Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer said Jared Carter was spotted by local police Tuesday afternoon as he walked down a street in Palestine in southeast Illinois. When stopped, Carter told police “I’m the guy you’re looking for.”

Carter escaped Friday while mowing at the minimum-security prison, which is six miles west of Palestine and near the Illinois-Indiana state line. He is serving time for burglary.

According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Corrections, Carter will be transferred to a maximum-security prison after the DOC finishes its investigation.
