TERRE HAUTE — A fire involving a semi-trailer stopped traffic for about 30 minutes on westbound Interstate 70 in Vigo County late Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured.

The incident occurred just east of Indiana 46 at about 3:50 p.m.

When Indiana State Police and the Riley Fire Department arrived at the scene, the trailer was engulfed in flames  that were spreading on to the grassy ditch area to the immediate north. Within minutes, Riley firefighters had the fire under control and extinguished.

Preliminary investigation revealed the truck’s driver, Carl Dixon, 43, of Richton Park, Ill., was pulling a soft-top trailer loaded with one steel coil.

He noticed the smoke, pulled to the shoulder and separated the truck from the trailer to prevent further damage.

Westbound I-70 traffic was stopped for about 30 minutes and slowed for at least another half hour as crews removed the damaged trailer.
