Sullivan driver dies after cardiac arrest, crash

TERRE HAUTE — A Sullivan man is believed to have gone into cardiac arrest Friday, crashed his vehicle in Vigo County and later died, authorities said.

Fred L. Peters, 77, of N. French St. in Sullivan, was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest when Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 10:32 p.m. Friday to Indiana 46 near Lama Road on reports of a vehicle crash, police said.

According to police, a 1999 Gold Mazda four-door had ran off the traveled portion of the roadway before striking a group of trees.

First responders performed life saving measures and transported Peters to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said that “early indications are that the driver may have suffered a medical condition immediately prior to the one-vehicle crash.”

Next of kin has been notified, police said.
