Duke Energy Indiana contractors poised to assist on East Coast

TERRE HAUTE — Duke Energy has released about 500 Indiana contractors who are not employees to assist with emergency response to Hurricane Sandy.

“Primarily, those who typically work for us during storms, will be going to the areas of greatest need,” Duke Energy spokesperson Angeline Protegere said Monday.

“We’re monitoring the storm closely as it progresses,” she said, “and if there is no significant impact here, we are in a position to send additional resources as needed.”

Duke customers in the Midwest — which includes portions of Indiana and Ohio — might see a weather impact of high winds, she said. So customers here must be handled first before local crews would be released to assist on the East Coast.

Duke Energy has already made 1,200 line workers available as a company, she said. Most of those are contractors, including the 500 from the Midwest, though some are employees from Florida, which was skipped by the storm.
