TERRE HAUTE — An accident Saturday morning  resulted in death for one and injury for another on the city’s north side.

According to an accident report issued by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred about 8 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Crystal Avenue and Clinton Street.

A vehicle driven by Lucy M. Bensinger, 96, was reportedly crossing Clinton Street from east to west and did not yield right of way to a van driven by Richard A. Shorter, 74.

The report states Shorter’s vehicle struck Bensinger’s in front of the driver’s side door, spinning it around. The van continued north after the initial impact, before crashing into a fence, mailbox and utility pole before coming to rest.

Bensinger was reportedly extricated from her vehicle and flown to Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m.

Shorter was reportedly transported to Union Hospital before being transferred to an Indianapolis hospital with injuries to the head.

A condition update was not available Sunday.

According to the report, Bensinger had been restrained with an air bag in her vehicle, but Shorter’s restraints were not in use, as was allowed per “medical exemption.”

The report also states that alcohol and drug tests are pending, but are not expected to be a contributing factor.
