The Terre Haute Housing Authority is launching a new approach for people applying for low-income housing.
Starting Friday, applicants for Housing Authority apartments or homes can apply in person at property management offices at the various THHA sites. Previously, applicants have been required to apply at the authority’s central office on North 19th Street.
“Sometimes it’s difficult for people to get up to the central office,” said Jeff Stewart, executive director of the Housing Authority. “We think it’s just going to be a more convenient way for people to apply to us.”
Housing authority properties have waiting lists for new residents. However, under the new system, applicants can choose to limit which sites for which they are on a waiting list. They may also choose to be on more than one waiting list.
A central office employee who formerly handled applicants for all Housing Authority sites will now be charged with monitoring compliance with federal regulations regarding all applicants, Stewart told the Housing Authority board, which met Monday night at the central office.
The board voted to adopt the new policy without opposition.
n Also Monday, the board learned that Dreiser Square, one of the authority’s elderly/disabled properties, scored a 96 out of 100 in a recent inspection by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. That was the highest score in recent memory for any authority property, Stewart told the board. “A 96 is a difficult score to get,” he said.
n Stewart also informed the board, a seven-person body appointed by the mayor, that authority residents have shown strong support for the new Mobile Market, a traveling fresh produce stand operated by the United Way and sponsored by the Vigo County Health Department, Union and Regional hospitals, Indiana State University and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.
The market “has been very well received by the tenants,” Stewart said.
The Mobile Market offers fresh fruits and vegetables for sale in low-income neighborhoods or in places, such as retirement communities, where people have difficulty getting to the grocery store. A schedule of stops for the market is available on the United Way of the Wabash Valley website at www.uwwv.org.
