ID of deceased man released; cause of death still pending

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities have released the identity of a man found whose body was found Saturday night in northwestern Vigo County.

Fingerprint comparisons have confirmed that the man is Nevelland A. Thompson Jr., 76, of the 2300 block of Tippecanoe Street in Terre Haute.

Thompson’s body was found near the body of a woman who died of strangulation in the same location. The woman’s identity has not been confirmed by police. However, Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos has ruled that the woman’s death is a homicide. Investigators believe the man and woman were in a relationship before their deaths.

The cause and manner of death for Thompson are still being investigated, according to information released Wednesday by the Indiana State Police and the coroner’s office. There were no physical injuries consistent with causing his death, ISP said.

The bodies of Thompson and the woman were found under a private road bridge near Indiana 150 and West Pennington Road in northwestern Vigo County on Saturday by people riding all-terrain vehicles in the area, police said.

Family members had reported Thompson missing to the Terre Haute Police Department on Oct. 12. Thompson reportedly was last seen on the Oct. 10. His family has been notified of his death.

The investigation into the cause and manner of his death continues; however, police said they have no evidence to suggest a third-party suspect. Toxicology results, expected to take two to four weeks, are pending on both Thompson and the woman.

The identity of the woman could be determined this week, police said, but if DNA testing must be conducted, her identity might not be confirmed for up to a month.
