Father arrested on battery, neglect charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute father faces an allegation of neglect of a dependent after he allegedly failed to call 911 after finding out his teenage child tried to overdose on pills.

Robert Hughes, 48, was arrested Sunday after police were called to his residence in the 2100 block of Beech Street. He appeared Monday morning in Vigo Superior Court 1 where Judge John Roach found probable cause for his arrest on suspicion of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Detective Travis Chessir of the Terre Haute Police Department stated in court that a neighbor called 911 reporting that the teen had taken pills after the argument with Hughes. The father had allegedly knocked the child down and locked the child out of the house. When police arrived, they found the child in medical distress. The child was taken to a local hospital and was then airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for additional treatment.

Chessir said Hughes admitted to battering the child and said he left the area on foot and did not call 911 to seek help for the child.

Roach set bail at $35,000 cash only. Hughes is to return to court Thursday for filing of formal charges.
